Therapeutic Yoga for arthritis: Joints are formed where two or more bones meet, and allow your body to bend and turn in all sorts of different ways.  They are designed to make movement as fluid and easy as possible.  The ends of the bones are lined with a smooth tissue called cartilage which prevents friction and surrounded by a lubricating fluid (known as synovial fluid).  But despite this protection, your joints are delicate and susceptible to wear and tear and as you age you may become more prone to one of a number of conditions known collectively as arthritis.

Therapeutic Yoga for backache: Your spine is supposed to be the ‘central axis’ of the body, much like the trunk of a tree or the weight-bearing axis of a tower.  However, all your organs – your heart, lungs, intestines, liver, spleen and so on – are in front of your spine and there is nothing at the back to counterbalance the weight of these organs.  Your spinal muscles therefore have to work extremely hard to keep your back straight and prevent you from falling flat on your face.  These muscles also create an anti-gravitational force that keeps your spine erect.

Therapeutic Yoga for repetitive strain injury: Keyboard operators, musicians, machinists, decorators, athletes and manual labourers often use the same muscles over and over again without a break in the course of their work.  These muscles then get so overworked that they start to develop a number of symptoms including pin, tingling, inflammation swelling, cramps and knots in the muscles (due to the build-up of lactic acid), numbness, weakness and often loss of function.  This is known as repetitive strain injury or RSI.  The hands, wrists, arms, shoulders and neck are most often affected, although the legs and feet can also be vulnerable.  RSI is a progressive condition, tending to get steadily worse if it’s not treated early enough.

Patanjali, the author of the Yoga Sutras, described the eight aspects of yoga as limbs of a tree.

Yama – ethical disciplines Pratyahara – sense withdrawal

Niyama – self observation dharana – concentration

Asana – posture dhyana – meditation

Pranayama – breath control samadhi – a state of joy and peac

“One who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, working and recreation can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system.” Bhagavad-Gita
